How does S. Hawking do? I've certainly seen more references to him in popular media than to J. von Neumann. Although I suspect there may be some bias towards physicists over mathematicians in the public.

Von Neumann is popular in certain circles, partly because he's less well known to the general public, making him sort of a "nerd's nerd."

As far as I can tell, Hawking wasn't especially ahead of his time in areas outside the sciences and had a messy personal life, so he will probably be remembered strictly as an intellectual sage.

I would guess the bias towards physics vs. math is just because the former is more concrete; you can gaze upon the stars in a way that you cannot gaze upon set theory.
